Many ways to make a Difference

Fundraise for us at an event or organise your own

Whether you manage to get a place in the Worthing 10k, the Brighton Half Marathon or an Ultra marathon, we can provide you with fundraising advice, help you set up on Just Giving and provide you with a T shirt.

Find out what local events are going on around you such as village fetes, coffee mornings and school fairs and ask if you can hold a stall. You could sell home baked cakes, hold a tombola, or run an activity like hook-a-duck for the children.

Throughout the year, we will hold our own fundraising events – sign up to our newsletter, follow us on socials or check out the ‘Events’ section of our website to keep up to date.

Fundraise for us at work

Some of the support we give helps parents to return to work – can your place of work help local parents get back on their feet?

Fundraising for us would be great for team bonding and morale boosting whilst supporting a local family going through a difficult time.

Employee fundraising – We can work together to create engaging fundraising initiatives for your employees.

Challenge events – Why don’t you or your colleagues take part in a challenge event – whether a charity run, cycle, trek, walk, skydive – we can support your company/ business/ team with fundraising packs, setting up Just Giving and promoting your fundraising efforts.

Payroll giving –  A tax-efficient scheme that allows you to make regular donations directly from your salary. It is a simple and effective way for employees to support us.

Matched giving – You can support your employees’ choice to donate to Home-Start by matching employees’ donations. This shows your employees that your company cares equally about a cause that matters to them. The usual procedure is for you and Home-Start AWA to fill in a simple form, which you will then hand to your employer. After the event Home-Start will confirm the amount you have raised and your employer can send a cheque to us to support our work.

Sponsorship of our events and appeals –  Each year we run a Christmas appeal and an event or two, with various sponsorship packages. Your support of these woould be promoted far and wide throughout Arun, Worthing & Adur, via our website, correspondence to all our supporters, our growing social media channels, press releases, leaflets and much more.

CRM (Cause Related Marketing) – Studies show consumers are more likely to buy a product advertised as ‘donating part of the proceeds to charity’ (YouGov survey). Your organisation could support us directly with a mutual benefit of income and raising awareness.

Volunteering – Our volunteers are at the heart of our charity and there are various volunteering opportunities to support our families. Get in touch to find out more.

Pro-bono work and gifts in kind – We know that your company and employees have valuable skills to offer. By offering pro bono work, your employees can use their communication expertise to help raise awareness of our cause, use their leadership skills and become a business mentor, or a local Home-Start board member to help us develop and grow.

Contact lucy@home-startawa.org.uk to chat about how this might work for your organisation.

Fundraise where you worship

Would your place of worship like a talk from one of our Trustees about our work? Could you arrange a retiring collection for our charity? Could you give us some space for copy in one of our church magazines?

lucy@home-startawa.org.uk can organise leaflets to be shared with your congregation, some of whom might benefit from knowing about our service.

Fundraise with your community group

Are you part of a Rotary or Lions group, WI, book club, choir, sports club, PTA, Probus group, gardening society, U3A, or running club? We’d love to work with you. Community groups play a vital role in supporting local families, and fundraising together is a brilliant way to make a real difference close to home.

We’re very happy to come along and give a short talk about our work, share the impact your support can have, and help you plan a fundraiser that suits your group — whether that’s a coffee morning, concert, quiz night, sponsored challenge or something entirely your own. We’ll support you every step of the way and, where you’d like it, help promote your group and your fundraising through our website and social media too.

Great Fundraising Ideas

Fundraising Ideas

  • Auction of promises – instead of auctioning items, ask your friends, family or work colleagues to pledge their time, skills and services to be put up for auction. People can bid for someone to spend the day as their handyman or for a nights babysitting.
  • Car boot and yard sales are a good excuse to have a clear out. Ask friends and family if they’d like to de-clutter their attics to and donate items for sale.
  • Something to celebrate? Have a party and ask guests if they would to make a donation to Home-Start instead of buying a present.
  • Host a quiz night at your local pub, community centre, school, cafe and charge a small entry fee to take part.
  • Hold a raffle – you could contact your local shops, pubs and restaurants to donate items or vouchers as prizes.
  • Supermarket bag packing – Get a few people you know to volunteer for a couple of hours. Offer to help pack people’s shopping in exchange for a donation. Contact your local supermarket as early as possible to arrange and time and date because slots often get booked up well in advance.
  • Host an amateur poker tournament playing to raise money. Set a buy-in price and then split the pot between the winner and Home-Start UK.
  • Seed Bank: In the springtime, ask local gardeners and garden centres for donations of seeds, seedlings or bedding plants and host an afternoon of garden sales.
  • Rent a karaoke machine and host a party at home, or speak to a local restaurant or bar about hosting for the evening. Charge an entry fee and have a prize for your winner.
  • Plan a scavenger hunt and charge teams an entry fee to take part. Create a list of items and photos the teams must obtain. Hold it in your local area and include some interesting local history facts or unique attractions. Add bonus tasks to make it even more fun, such as getting a photo of the entire team jumping. Set a time limit and impose a penalty of -1 point for each minute a player is late. Arrange for somewhere to reconvene and total up how many points each player’s scored. The winner gets a prize or bragging rights.
  • If you work for a restaurant, you could suggest that a 50p donation is made on each bill or have a charity tip box for one particular table which will support our work.

Keeping it Safe & Legal – important reading for fundraisers

Charity fundraising is regulated by law. Full guidelines from IOF here (Chartered Institute of Fundraising – New and popular guidance and resources (ciof.org.uk))

Any events or activities you organise should clearly state that you are fundraising ‘in aid of’ Home Start AWA. You must be aware that you are acting in aid of an organisation and have no authority to act in our name and that you are simply raising funds for the organisation but acting in your own capacity.

First aid – to find guidance on the level of First aid required at your event you, look at St John’s Ambulance website here (First Aid Courses, Advice & Volunteering | St John Ambulance (sja.org.uk)).

Money – if you’re fundraising on a private property, you need the owner’s permission. If in a public place, you need permission from the local council. We have collection tins you can use but you must keep them secure and somewhere safe after the event. They are only to be opened by a designated person in the presence of a witness.

Alcohol – measures must be made to ensure that under 18’s are not served. If you need a licence, you can find more at GOV.UK. (Alcohol licensing – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk))

Food – guidance on preparation and food hygiene can be found here (Food hygiene for your business | Food Standards Agency) to food standards agency.

Health and Safety – you should carry out a risk assessment of your event and if your event involves the public, you’ll need public liability insurance. The venue may have this and may cover your event but you should check. Home Start AWA cannot accept liability for a fundraising activity or event that someone undertakes in support of our charity.  check out the advice from the Health and Safety Executive (Events health and safety (hse.gov.uk)

Raffles/ Lottery – advice can be found at Gambling Commission link here (www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk)
